Cancer Risk Among Patients With Multiple Sclerosis Assessed

Cancer risk among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) was assessed. According to recent research published in the International Journal of Cancer, "Cancer occurrence in patients with MS has been little studied, but associations with brain tumors, breast cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma have been suggested.

Cervical Cancer Screening Via Liquid-based Vs. Conventional Cytology Were Compared

Cervical cancer screening via liquid-based vs. conventional cytology was compared in a recent study.

Functionalized Nanoparticles May Be A Useful Drug Carrier For Tumor Targeting

Functionalized nanoparticles (NP) may be a useful drug carrier for tumor targeting. According to recent research published in the journal Bioconjugate Chemistry, "In this study, selective cancer cell targeting of biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) NPs has been investigated in vitro.

Cytology Of Ileal Conduit Urine Bladder Cancer Studied

The cytology of ileal conduit urine bladder cancer was examined. Investigators in India conducted research "to study the cytomorphology of urine obtained from the ileal conduit and to determine its utility and identify the pitfalls. Urine specimens from 469 cases of suspected or proven bladder cancer received over a period of 5 years were analyzed in the cytology laboratory." "In 35 cases, total bladder resection was followed by ileal conduit reconstruction. The follow-up cytologic analysis of these 35 ileal conduit cases formed the basis of this study.

Lung Cancer Is On Rise For Female Nonsmokers

Dana Reeve coughed for a year before she knew why. She never once thought of lung cancer. She had never smoked. The cancer threat never entered her mind, so she tragically did not take the cough too seriously, she said in one of her last public interviews. Older men with voices turned gravelly by decades of heavy smoking get lung cancer, most of us assume. Certainly not young women who have always shunned cigarettes. How wrong we are. Dana Reeve died Monday, six months after she learned her cough was caused by the worst of all cancer killers, lung cancer.

Research In Lung Cancer Provides New Insights

Reports from the United States highlight recent research on lung cancer. Study 1: Cytochrome P450 (CYP)1A1 and CYP1B1 polymorphisms were linked to lung cancer risk. According to recent research published in the journal Carcinogenesis, "The CYP superfamily of enzymes catalyze one of the first steps in the metabolism of carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitroaromatics and arylamines.

Lung Cancer Overdiagnosis Is Uncommon With Ct Screening

CT screening for lung cancer was reviewed, with overdiagnosis found uncommon. "The aim of this study was to assess the significance of Stage I diagnoses of lung cancer in the baseline cycle of screening for this disease, with special reference to the potential for overdiagnosis. We reviewed all 69 cases of Stage I lung cancer diagnosis resulting from our baseline CT screening. Among these 69 cases of lung cancer, 24 presented as solid, 30 as part-solid, and 15 as nonsolid nodules," scientists in the United States reported.

To Patron With Cancer, Red Robin Crew Is A Cut Above

"I'm overwhelmed," Walt Winkler said. He was seated in a booth at Red Robin restaurant near Hilliard -- thin, softspoken, his hair lost to chemotherapy. Winkler, 75, has inoperable lung cancer. He had just come from making funeral arrangements for himself. But that wasn't the overwhelming part. What touched him and his wife, Diana, were the shaved scalps and bobbed hairdos at Red Robin, 1865 Hilliard-Rome Rd. Some restaurant workers, in support of the Winklers, have put their hearts where their hair used to be. The bareheaded include Walt's only child, Chris, a 33-year-old assistant manager.

New Data Illuminates Research In Lung Cancer

Data on lung cancer are outlined in reports from Japan and Italy. Study 1: Nedaplatin (NDP) and paclitaxel were deemed effective in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). "A phase I study was conducted to evaluate the maximum tolerated dose and feasibility of combination with NDP and paclitaxel in patients with NSCLC. Fifteen patients under 75 years old, with unresectable NSCLC who had not previously received chemotherapy or radiotherapy, with a performance status of 0-1, were enrolled," investigators in Japan reported.

Ovarian Cancer Biomarkers Are Sought To Enhance Early Disease Detection

Researchers have designed a study to seek new ovarian cancer biomarkers that will enhance early disease detection. "Early detection and monitoring the treatment remain the most important factors in improving long-term survival of ovarian cancer patients. New biomarkers that individually or in combination improve the diagnostic performance of existing tumor markers are critically needed," asserted researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center." F.B. Kong and colleagues explained, "This study uses proteomic approaches to identify new biomarkers for detection and monitoring of ovarian cancer.
